WHAT CHAPLAINS AND
WORKERS DO
Christian Science
chaplains and workers are members of a local branch church, or society,
who volunteer their free time to conduct church services and/or
one-on-one interviews to inmates confined in adult institutions; or
conduct Sunday School classes for those under the age of twenty
confined in a juvenile institution. Also, chaplains (not workers)
may do metaphysical treatment for inmates when requested.
Chaplains and workers may provide Christian Science-authorized
literature to inmates where institutions allow such material to be
brought in. Literature may include Science and Health with Key to the
Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, Weekly Bible-Lesson Sermon and
Christian Science Periodicals (i.e.
Sentinel and Herald).
Inmates wanting to speak with a Christian Science chaplain and/or
receive Christian Science literature usually make a request through the
institution's staff chaplain. Chaplains work with the
institution's staff chaplain to organize workshops on topical subjects
to help the inmates in their spiritual growth and development.
